Laboratories and R & D Facilities |
HHI oversaw the completion of renovation of a 18,197 SF Chemical Research and Development Laboratory located in the Ditto area of Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The project also included a 1,080 SF addition for new mechanical and electrical equipment.
The outstanding features of this project are the 19 new radioisotope fume hoods connected to state-of-the-art Phoenix controls in four separate HEPA filtered exhaust systems. The exhaust system incorporates more than 40,000 pounds of welded stainless steel ductwork, all tested and certified for zero leakage. In addition, the lab rooms contain more than 300 linear feet of laboratory casework with epoxy resin countertops, VariAC power supplies, vented flammable base cabinets, DI water fixtures, and acid-waste drain piping.
The building was retrofitted with 2,000A 208V and 5,000A 480V electrical service from two 1,500 kVA transformers. Three separate motor control centers provide clean, filtered VFD power to the heating, cooling and exhaust system equipment. The HVAC system and laboratory equipment are backed up by a total of 1,750 kW of power on two diesel generators. Testing chambers have 28V DC power supplies with Crouse-Hinds Arktite receptacles.
Other construction features consisted of complete interior demolition; underground tank removal; site concrete pads; site utilities; concrete footings, foundation and flat work; CMU walls for addition and in-fill; steel joists and deck; standing seam metal roof system; TPO single ply membrane roofing; replacement of doors and windows; new finishes including special epoxy coatings; systems furniture; Stanley-Vidmar industrial casework with maple hard-wood tops; mechanical & plumbing systems; LP gas boilers; RO & DI water treatment; lab air and vacuum compressors; fire and agent alarm systems; Vindicator intrusion detection system; wireless radio intercom systems.
HHI Corporation worked closely with the Government and design team to value-engineer several aspects of the project to generate needed funds to cover costs of unexpected site conditions in the existing building as well as owner requested changes.

The Poisonous Plants Lab project included the construction of 6 ancillary outbuildings for the use of testing the effects of poisonous plants on livestock, including surgical and laboratory facilities. Work included all divisions. The facility will be used for the testing, inspection, and analyzing of the effects poisonous plants have on livestock. The buildings include a surgery building, extraction building, greenhouse building, cow pen, soil pen, and scale buildings. The project includes demolition work, modification and upgrading of office and warehousing areas, the construction and installation of two large bridge cranes, and improvements to shop and work areas. All construction was performed with adjoining buildings maintaining their normal operations.
Built at the Dugway Proving Ground, this project included equipment installation, including air compressor, air lines, flexible duct, ventilation system, filtration system, swing gate installation, pressure sensors, hoists and a remote weather station. Work also included electrical components, flood lights, separate power supplies to roof winches, six separate main control panels, and wiring to all mechanical equipment and dissemination test equipment.
